La Transe Gaule is an 18-day, 1145 km stage race across France, from the Brittany coast to the Mediterranean Sea.  First run in 2001, the race is the child of Jean Benoit Jaouen and Christophe Rochotte, who dreamed of the great coast-to-coast races across the USA and Australia.  But, France is perfect for this!  It is a manageable size to run during a normal vacation, it is a beautiful and diverse country with mild weather, no deserts, good food, and with many small and charming towns linked by quiet country roads.

Stages ranged in length from 49 km (stage 11) to  78 km (stage 2).

26 runners toed the starting line in Roscoff on August 28.  About half were French, there were 3 Americans, 2 Germans, 2 Dutch, one Czech, and one viking from Norway.
